The following example shows how much of the day we spend sitting down.

This is a thoroughly normal working day of an "office worker": He gets up at 06:30, sits down to breakfast and maybe reads a newspaper as he eats. He gets into his car (or public transport) and drives to the office. He sits down at his desk and works 3 to 4 hours. He goes to lunch and sits down at the table. He sets down again at his desk and remains there for another 4 to 5 hours. He takes the car home and sits down to his evening meal and then in front of the television. Then he goes to bed.

All this generally gives rise to the following problems:

• Predominantly the same sitting posture for many hours at a time.
• The changeover between stressing and relaxing the spine is prevented. This means that the spinal discs are not properly provided with nutrients.
• Constant repetitive movement can lead to functional limitations of the muscles. This results in pain. In the case of chronic pain, the individual pattern of movement adjusts to the pain condition. (RSI - repetitive strain injury, CTS - carpal tunnel syndrome, and mouse syndrome are symptoms of our times)
• Working in front of a monitor: Head and rear neck complaints due to incorrect positioning of the monitor screen. Eye irritation due to prolonged periods of staring fixedly at the display (Blinking occurs to infrequently, and is particularly problematic in the case of people wearing contact lenses), concentration problems due to glare and reflections, etc.
